With so much video content at people’s finger tips, it’s never been more important to stand out. Solid journalism will always be the bedrock of a great story, but a creative approach can spark curiosity and keep people coming back for more.
In 2020, I developed a course all about pushing my fellow storytellers at CBC News to think outside the box and to consider different approaches. Now, I regularly deliver the course for CBC journalists across the country and I’m constantly inspired by the fresh ideas and new perspectives I learn from the participants.
Approaching individual stories in a new way is fun and important, but I’m also finding success approaching entire special broadcasts differently. On this page you’ll find two of the election shows I’ve hosted for CBC News.
We created this video to open CBC Toronto's election night special of the 2023 mayoral by-election. We wanted to make sure the show felt rooted in a collective experience and thought this was a fun way to get everybody on the same page highlighting the most pressing issues facing the mayor.
In this video, we break down the major issues with Toronto's housing situation and look across the country and around the globe to find solutions in other cities. What if they were all done here?
Check out this video I edited together highlighting the main moments of CBC Toronto's 2023 mayoral by-election. Presented in front of a live studio audience, I was so proud of how this show came together!

The triumph of incumbents makes electing new talent increasingly improbable. So the incumbent advantage leads to a real disadvantage for city democracy, including limiting diversity of thought, identity, and background.
Solo anchoring a live election special with no prompter is thrilling enough, but add a bit of innovation into the mix and this night was magic. In 2018, I hosted CBC Toronto’s municipal election special live from Twitter HQ.
Partnering with the social media company, we were able to give the audience analytics on election night that no one else was able to. We were the first Canadian broadcaster to simulcast an election special in both horizontal and vertical video formats, so it could stream on TV screens and mobile devices. We even picked up an RTDNA award nomination for the live special.

In this piece, we tried to write as little as possible and let the personality of the characters take center stage.
What’s better than explaining the thrill of the world’s longest, fastest and tallest dive coaster? Showing the fear in my eyes in real time on board the ride. I strapped the GoPro on the seat in front of me and used a regular news camera to capture good audio to build a story that packed as much of a rush as the ride itself.
Live interviews are a great way to get your blood pumping. Whether it’s a politician who needs to be held to account over a critical decision, or an Olympian celebrating a gold medal performance, pulling out the goods during a live interview is a passion of mine.
My approach to interviewing is to lead with compassion and curiosity. I always try to remember the interview is about helping the audience understand a key issue and seeing how the guest’s brain ticks. Plus, when the moment is right, sharing a laugh or a tear — it’s all about the human experience. I like to be vulnerable, which I find encourages vulnerability from my guests too.

The resiliency and good-humor of Kelli Franklin was on full display during this live interview. The Calgary woman has struggled with COVID-19 long haul symptoms for years.
In the beginning, Ontario’s vaccine rollout was the slowest per capita and among the most contentious in the country, with a pause over the Christmas break. Here is an interview with the chair of Ontario’s vaccine task force, Rick Hillier, about the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out and criticisms of his strategy.
The best way to get the story is to go towards the action, and you don’t get much more active than Washington D.C. The centre of America’s power is a hotbed for stories, compelling people, and decisions that resonate in the States and across the globe.
